Q: Which Version of Windows am I running

To check what version of Windows is installed on your computer follow the steps from one of the below methods:

Method One

This method will only display very basic information about your computer and which version of Windows is installed, if you need more information about your computer go to Method Two, Three, or Four on this page.

  1. On your keyboard hold the “Windows Key” and hit “R”, then release the keys
    • Where is the “Windows Key”? The “Windows Key” is located on the left side of the keyboard in between “Ctrl” and “Alt”, If you can not find or your keyboard does not have a “Windows Key” go to Method Three on this page
  2. The “Run” dialog box appears
  3. In the “Run” dialog type “winver” without the quotes and hit enter
  4. The “About Windows” dialog will appear, displaying which version of Windows is installed, click “OK” when done.

Method Two

  1. On your keyboard hold the “Windows Key” and hit “Pause/Break” key, then release the keys
    • Where is the “Windows Key”? The “Windows Key” is located on the left side of the keyboard in between “Ctrl” and “Alt”, If you can not find or your keyboard does not have a “Windows Key” go to Method Three on this page
    • Where is the “Pause/Break” key? The “Pause/Break” key is located above your arrow keys and at the top of your keyboard, next to the Scroll Lock Key. If you can not find or your keyboard does not have a “Pause/Break” key go to Method Three on this page
  2. The “System Properties” dialog appears, in this window you will find which version of Windows is installed, and other technical information about your computer. When done you may close the window.

Method Three

If the icon “My Computer” or “Computer” appear on the desktop:

  1. With the Desktop visible, right click on the icon “My Computer” or “Computer”
  2. A context menu will appear, at the bottom of this menu click “Properties”
  3. The “System Properties” dialog appears, in this window you will find which version of Windows is installed, and other technical information about your computer. When done you may close the window.

If the icon “My Computer” or “Computer” does not appear on the desktop:

  1. Click the “Start” Button
  2. In the Start Menu right click “My Computer” or “Computer”
  3. A context menu will appear, at the bottom of this menu click “Properties”
  4. The “System Properties” dialog appears, in this window you will find which version of Windows is installed, and other technical information about your computer. When done you may close the window.

Method Four

  1. Click the “Start” Button
  2. In the start menu click “Control Panel”
    • “Control Panel” is not there. If there is no button available for the “Control Panel” check under “Settings”
  3. In the “Control Panel” window find the icon “System”
  4. Double Click the “System” icon
  5. The “System Properties” dialog appears, in this window you will find which version of Windows is installed, and other technical information about your computer. When done you may close the window.
